Was woken up by a male voice outside the front of my house at 3am. Looked out the window and saw a police officer standing on my garden wall, waving a torch around at my house and trying to look down the side of my house to the gardens behind. By the time I had put some clothes on he had gone - even though he clearly had seen me he didn't communicate with me in any way about what was going on.

My security lights in the back had been triggered - so I was left assuming someone the police were looking for had been in my garden (and still hadn't been found). Couldn't sleep because I was worried about whether or not I still had an intruder on my property. 20 minutes later we had the helicopter overhead making a racket too.

Rather than making the community feel safer, this sort of behaviour just makes people more anxious....

Suggestion

The officer had acknowledged seeing me and spoken to me about what was going on rather than just disappearing. Or to have had a follow up call or note through the door the next day to let me know what had been happening on my property.

Fast moving pursuit is seen on TV and usually from America. I sincerely hope I can help STOP the risk in the first place so that less crime is committed. I have some initiatives to help the Police:
1: First of all a move to total road safety so that accidents do not happen (more sleeping police and lower speed limits, zero tolerance of dangerous driving etc.)
2: Neighbourhood access control for vehicles so that criminals who have stolen a car cannot enter a neighbourhood due to bollards that only retract when operated by a local residents“ access card“, and of course Police and other emergency service vehicles.
3: More Police on foot patrols and greater neighbourhood involvement. Point 1 makes this possible as there will be less accidents so Police time available for the community will increase.
All this can easily be paid for by increasing the petrol tax so that driving a car full of 3 passengers is the same price, on average, as public transport for 4 people.
This will not only help reduce congestion and crime but also help meet our CO2 reduction goals and promote public transport which is good for everyone in the community.
More Police, More funding, Safe roads, NO crime ! easy !

In a fast moving pursuit, I doubt if it was possible for officers to revisit every property to explain what they were doing. Are you sure it was not curiosity and thirst for knowledge that prompted the post. To settle your mind a quick call to the control room would perhaps be the best course of action if ever this situation recurs.
